Description
Early in 1954, Max Hoffman, the company's New York distributor, and Ferry Porsche met for a discussion about how to increase automobile sales in the United States, the company's most important market. To compete with the British and Italian sports cars that were proving to be so popular with US customers, Porsche agreed to build a basic, inexpensive sports car.
The $2,995 base pricing of the Speedster made it a popular item in the showroom, particularly in warmer climates. "Years ahead in engineering, miles ahead on the road", boasted a typical Hoffman advertisement of the day. It was common for entire grids to be made up of speedsters in amateur racing, whether they were powered by fierce Carrera four-cam engines or pushrod engines.
